Life on Caye Caulker ... to say it's laid-back is an understatement. Settle into a hammock and listen to the wind rustling through the coconut palms. Relaxation on Caye Caulker is not an option -- it's unavoidable. Located just 21 miles from Belize City, Caye Caulker feels like it's light years away. This tiny island, a half mile wide and five miles long, consists of sandy roads traveled by golf carts, bicycles and barefoot of course. The photograph in the background is a view down Caye Caulker front street - the busiest of the streets on the caye. A map of Caye Caulker is not necessary because you can't get lost. Caye Caulker is still a peaceful fishing village dominated by clapboard houses and flowering plants. The northern and southern ends of the caye are sparsely populated so they're natural sanctuaries for the 150 species of birds that inhabit the island. Take a walk down the beach to the "Split", a watery passage that divides Caye Caulker. Getting to Caye Caulker is part of the experience. You can fly or take a water taxi. Restaurants on Caye Caulker are small, family-owned establishments serving Belizean cuisine, a wide variety of seafood and specialties like cinnamon rolls at Glenda's Restaurant. Lobster is still a bargain on Caye Caulker but only available during the lobster season (June 15 - February 15). After dinner there are a number of small bars serving local beer (Belikin) and tropical drinks. The Oceanside offers live entertainment on weekends.
