Golfing on Caye Chapel

Playing golf is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Belize, but it is possible. In fact, just a short boat ride away on the neighboring island of Caye Chapel there is a golf course. Imagine teeing it up on a small island in the Caribbean and you're the only one on the course. Yes, this well manicured, championship layout is one of the best kept secrets.

Caye Chapel is a very challenging layout that is appropriately designed for a narrow, tropical island. The fairways are tight with numerous water hazards and plenty of sand bunkers and waste areas. The front nine has narrow fairways with water on every hole. The back side is a little more open with a more varied terrain and more doglegs. It's also longer, including a 600+ yd. par 5 that hugs the leeward coast of the island. The course is not particularly long from the white tees, but a good test from the tips, and when the wind is blowing you could be in for a long day. The greens are quite large with challenging undulations and if you've never putted on Bermuda grass it's even more difficult. Basically, there's a great variety of holes from short par 4's to long par 5's. You'll want to go around a couple of times to learn the layout.

The best part of this whole golf thing is nobody plays golf down here so odds are there will be nobody else on the course. The cost is $150.00 US dollars (plus tax) for unlimited play, clubs, cart, lunch and pool privileges. The cost may seem high but when you consider how many opportunities there are to play your own private course it's one of the best bargains around.
