Caye Caulker Belize
A little about the relaxing little island of Caye Caulker
Life on Caye Caulker… to say it’s laid-back is an understatement. Settle into a hammock and listen to the wind rustling through the coconut palms. Relaxation on Caye Caulker is not an option – it’s unavoidable.
Located just 21 miles from Belize City, Caye Caulker feels like its light years away. This tiny island, a half mile wide and five miles long, consists of sandy roads traveled by golf carts, bicycles, and bare feet, of course. There are only three main thoroughfares: front street, middle street and back street. The streets were actually named a few years back but they haven’t really caught on. A map of Caye Caulker is not necessary because you can’t get lost.
Caye Caulker is still a peaceful fishing village dominated by clapboard houses but progress has found our little haven and larger hotels and condos are starting to spring up. The northern and southern ends of the Caye are sparsely populated so they’re natural sanctuaries for the 150 species of birds that inhabit the island. Take a walk north along the beach to the “Split”, a watery passage that divides Caye Caulker, to spend a day relaxing in the sunshine and sipping a tropical beverage.
Restaurants on Caye Caulker are small, often family-owned establishments serving Belizean and international cuisine. Lobster is still a bargain on Caye Caulker but only available during the lobster season (approximately June 15 – February 15). After dinner there are a number of small bars serving local beer and tropical drinks. Please inquire at the front desk for restaurant options.
